Project Abstract

This research project is a collaboration between the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.) and the National Technical University of Athens (N.T.U.A.). It aims to study in depth the topology and dynamics of the internet and the World Wide Web, two examples of structures that interrest a large community of researchers working on a relatively new science, that of complex networks. The scientific results of this project intend to give more light to the following areas:

  • Stability and robustness of the networks under intentional external attacks.
  • Immunization and security of the networks (e.g. using smart vaccination techniques).
  • Advances in the search strategies used on this networks.
For our research we will use methods from the modern statistical physics, and computational modeling techniques. All the analyses will be based on real "experimental" data of the network structure, that will be collected using automated computer programs (robots). Our final goal is to understand better this kind of complex networks and to develop more sophisticated strategies for their use.
